The South Taiwan Environmental Science and Technology Park has a total of four flood detention ponds that regulate the flow of rainwater. Created using the ecological engineering method, the ponds have banks with a natural ground cover and shallow waters which are overgrown with plants, forming a perfect place for birds to play in the waters. Egrets and other unknown water birds are often seen around the ponds, which are also the best place for insects to multiply. Dragonflies and damselflies frequently appear in the pleasant summer and autumn seasons, especially at nightfall. The red dragonflies dancing against the red backdrop of the setting sun create the most amazing spectacle!

Through the plan project, the long-neglected flood retention ponds in the industrial area are transformed into an ecological landscape. In utilizing plants in the marshes for the effective filtration of industrial waste water without affecting the pond’s original flood regulating function, coexistence of the ecological and industrial regions is made possible and an environment with sustainable operation is created. The concept of natural ecological conservation is also promoted and an excellent Natural Ecological Education Park is provided for the community residents and tourists.

Not only do the flood detention ponds serve the purpose of storage, they are planned for diverse functions as well. They can be transformed into wetland parks using construction methods that conform to ecological principles. This increases ecological diversity in the urban areas, which are connected to the neighboring green belts to form an important part of the green porch of Northern Kaohsiung.

In the treatment of such valuable treasures, a complex, diverse and integrated living space for animals can be provided in order to create and maintain biodiversity. Furthermore, an ecological survey of the flood detention ponds around the Green Pavilion is carried out for the creation of an excellent ecological environment, building and maintenance of diversity, as well as the establishment of an integrated and biological enrichment model.
